Realizing Student Potential

Call for Presentations is Closed.

Introduction

Effectively educating today's Minnesota college and university student is at once exciting, challenging, and rewarding. Educators must continually reflect on and revise our thinking and practice to serve our students well. As we see our classrooms become increasingly diverse in terms of student demographics, varied academic skills and levels of preparedness, new approaches are needed to teach well, meet our students' academic needs, and maintain academic integrity. This conference will examine teaching and learning issues that promote maximum student learning. We will share strategies designed to teach today's students for tomorrow's success.

Realizing Student Potential seeks proposals for concurrent sessions from all statewide faculty, staff, administrators, and students. Here are just a few possible topics for concurrent session proposals:

  • Engaging students in active learning
  • Classroom management and civility issues
  • Demonstrating student success; assessing student learning
  • Teaching English language learners (non-native American English speaking students)
  • Student support services
  • Disability issues and services
  • Educating Minnesota's workforce
  • Service-learning and civic engagement
  • Reflecting on our ever more challenging profession
  • Teaching under-prepared and differently prepared students
  • Students helping students learn: lab assistants, peer tutors, etc.
  • Student diversity: race, ethnicity, gender, age, social class, ability and more
  • First-year-experience programs that help students stay and succeed in college
  • Using technology to support student learning; using technology to expand classroom opportunities

We invite you to submit a session proposal online for any of the following Session Types:

Forums
Forums will be 60-minute sessions that form the core of conference offerings. These feature key issues, programs, papers, and successful practices related to the conference theme. Concurrent sessions are intended for an audience of approximately 15 – 40 people. Presenters are expected to use active learning techniques to engage audiences, to distribute materials, and to respond to follow-up requests for more information. Forums can be structured with as a panel of presenters or with one presenter. Number of presenters is limited to five people.

Roundtables
Roundtable sessions afford a more personal and interactive setting for exploration of key issues related to the conference. These sessions are 60 minutes and will be held during other concurrent sessions. Roundtables are aimed at audiences of 10 – 15. Roundtables are particularly well suited for exploratory topics and topics that require small group interchange. Roundtable presenters are expected to facilitate substantive discussions and small group activities and to distribute handouts. Your technology needs will be handled on a case-by-case basis; you may need to be flexible.

Poster
Poster sessions visually demonstrate a teaching and learning project or best practice. If you have received a CTL grant, a poster session may be an ideal venue for you to display your work. It is also ideal for demonstrating student success projects held in or out of the classroom. An 8' table and chairs will be provided, but poster session presenters are responsible for bringing all needed equipment and materials. Very limited technology facilities and support are available. The conference has capped the number of Poster sessions to 10.
