Location: Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, Bloomington, Minnesota
November 13 - November 14, 2009
Keynote Speaker: Miriam Diamond & Marc Prensky
Generational differences are affecting the college teaching and learning environment as never before. Born since 1981, Millennial Students, also called the “Net Generation,” form the largest cohort since the Baby Boom, numbering more than 80 million and constituting more than 41% of the current population. They are predicted to enter colleges in record numbers in 2010. The goal of this conference, then, is to address the pressing need for educators to understand and address generational differences on campuses and to discover how faculty and staff are tackling the issues and challenges that arise between generations, both between faculty and students and among faculty themselves. Our goal is to find ways to continue to provide good work climates for all and quality teaching and learning across the curricula. “Bridging the Generational Divide: Working Together to Teach Millennial Students” will be held in November, 2009, at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, Bloomington, Minnesota.

Location: Campus Center Building
November 6, 2009, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
North Hennepin Community College
Today’s fiscal/economic, environmental and health crisis provide huge challenges for Higher Ed, especially for the pursuit of expanded intercultural, international and global education. New kinds of collaborations, partnerships and paradigms, however, may offer ways forward in the arena of Higher Ed. New collaborations, partnerships and paradigms also offer ways to address and “solve” the crisis areas themselves. These are the concepts we want to explore at our conference. We also want to showcase good examples of collaboration, partnerships and new paradigms within and among Higher Ed institutions and between Higher Ed and business, government and NGO sectors both here in the U.S. and abroad.
Who should attend: Faculty and staff who are interested in deepening their knowledge of the three crisis areas. Faculty & staff in economics or business, nursing or allied health fields, environmental studies, social sciences or global studies and intercultural education and international programming including study abroad and exchange of students and scholars.

October 22 - October 24, 2009
AAC&U has opened registration for Integrative Learning: Addressing the Complexities. We encourage you to register now to take advantage of the best rates.
Early registration available now through September 30, 2009
This conference highlights integrative learning and its increasing importance in a complex, globalized world. How are colleges and universities helping students think and work across discrete domains of knowledge? How does college help students "connect the dots" and think in integrative ways? What types of activities allow students to apply their learning to new situations, in order to practice the skills and abilities necessary for today’s world? Where in the curriculum and cocurriculum are students challenged to grapple with moral and ethical issues that require them to take seriously the perspectives of others and to make wise and informed decisions in the midst of competing values and complex situations? And what kinds of learning help students develop a sense of efficacy to tackle the deep and often entrenched problems facing us as individuals and both local and global communities?

eveloping valid, reliable assessments (tests) of job specific knowledge and skills is critical to effective defensible practice in workforce development and human resources.
Occupational knowledge and skill assessments are used for many personnel- and education-related functions, including:
- Workforce development and Career Technical Education accountability (Perkins IV),
Personnel selection and placement,
Training needs assessment or diagnosis, and
Individual certification and licensure.
A carefully-designed systematic approach to test construction maximizes return on investment and contributes to candidate satisfaction and motivation. Poorly designed assessments may yield erroneous and damaging results, leading to employee or candidate dissatisfaction, ineffective credentialing decisions and possible exposure to litigation.

Let Me Learn: the Tipping Point to Achieving Success with Students

October 9 - October 10, 2009
A Regional Workshop for Higher Education Professionals
Why Attend the Regional Conference? Colleges and Universities have developed excellent approaches to stem student loss from their campuses “Yet, the numbers of students who are unsuccessful, withdraw from college, or just quietly fade away remains alarmingly high.” (Facilitating Student and Staff Success. College Quarterly, 9, 2).
What make’s Let Me Learn the “tipping point?” The Let Me Learn Process, identified by John Gardner in 2007 as “the next ‘big idea’ for enabling student success” is an advanced learning system which relies upon a powerful theoretical basis of learning and metacognition, a set of practical tools (the Learning Connections Inventory, the Learner Profile, the Word Wall, the Metacognitive Drill, and the Strategy Card), and fifteen years of research and application in higher education that have yielded a documented record of improving student learning, retention, and persistence.

Imperialism and Nationalism in Modern Asia
View detailsEvent
Location: University of Minnesota - Minneapolis campus
August 10 - August 14, 2009
This course will examine two determining and often contradictory historical forces that have shaped contemporary Asia: imperialism and nationalism. We will explore the logic of capitalist expansion and the various theories that have been ventured about the nature of this social form. In the case of countries such as China and Vietnam, the focus will be on the counter-logic of decolonization, internationalist communism, and anti-systemic currents such as the Cultural Revolution. In the case of the subcontinent, we will explore the developments in the late colonial period that led to Partition and the formation of India and Pakistan along largely religious lines. The implications of the role of the US in the region as a whole (but especially in Vietnam, Japan, and Taiwan) for our discussions will also be addressed. Films, documentaries, and writings by the likes of Natsume Soseki, Mao Tse Tung, Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Iqbal and others will ground the discussions and lectures. Scholars working on different regions, languages, and social or cultural phenomena will guest lecture over the course of the week.

Location: University of Minnesota - Minneapolis campus
July 6 - July 11, 2009
How we know is always shaped by the media through which we acquire, store, and distribute knowledge. For this reason, the history of media offers a rich vantage point for studying the historical development of modern Western knowledge as whole. This week long summer institute will pursue this line of inquiry by studying the development of Western methods for ordering, inscribing, and communicating knowledge from the medieval period to the present. Our focus will be on the changing conception of the "encyclopedia," or universal compendium of knowledge, during this period. We will start with the scribal and oral encyclopedic practices of medieval scholars, and then look at the transformation wrought by moveable type and replicable images after 1500. We will also examine the new projects of universal Enlightenment that took hold after 1700 around the new culture of widespread book publication, circulation, and literacy. We will conclude by examining the rise of new media such as radio, film, television, and internet-based digital communication and the continuities and changes these new media present. Our sessions will take advantage of the University of Minnesota's James Ford Bell and Owen H. Wangensteen libraries of rare and historic books to study actual historical artifacts related to the history of media. Time will also be alloted during each session for participants to develop level-appropriate curriculum suitable for taking the insights of this institute into elementary and secondary school classrooms.

Transitional Justice: Seeking Truth and Accountability for Systematic Human Rights Violations

Location: University of Minnesota - Minneapolis campus
July 6 - July 11, 2009
Countries emerging from eras of repression, armed conflict, or mass atrocities must find a way to address the past before they can make a successful transition into more open, democratic societies. What to do with the past is a dramatic decision for a society that has experienced grave violations to individuals and groups, and to the public’s trust in government. This week-long course will explore some of the methods and mechanisms that have been developed by national and international actors, including truth commissions, prosecutions and compensation, to assist societies to transition away from a repressive past. Case studies will include South Africa’ and Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, the Special Tribunal for Cambodia, community-based “gacaca” courts in Rwanda, ad hoc international tribunals on Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, the Iraqi Special Tribunal for Crimes against Humanity, and the International Criminal Court.

Race, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Contemporary European Soccer and Society: The Status of Ethnic Minorities in the New Europe
View detailsEvent
June 29 - July 2, 2009
Soccer is the most widely watched and played team sport in Europe, and Western Europe is also home to the largest, wealthiest, and most prestigious soccer leagues in the world. The game’s appeal is virtually universal, transcending all existing socio-economic, religious, and racial barriers in contemporary European society, and this course employs soccer to examine the second-class status of the continent’s ethnic minorities. These minorities are principally composed of immigrants from Europe’s former colonies in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Most arrived during the economic boom years of the early postwar era, and have, as a rule, remained on the margins of European society ever since. This class looks at how the sport acts to illuminate both long-standing ethnic and sectarian divisions within European society, as well as newer racially related grievances. The pervasiveness of such antipathies in today’s game, in turn, raises questions about what it exactly means to be “European”, and whether or not soccer ultimately can contribute to creating a more inclusive definition of citizenship. The course employs an interdisciplinary approach, relying on a combination of scholarly essays, films, and works of literature to explore these topics. Particular attention will be paid to the position of African and Caribbean players in British and French soccer.

Refugee Utopias: Communalism and Violence in SE Asian Refugee Camps and Refugee Migrations

Location: University of Minnesota - Minneapolis campus
June 22 - June 26, 2009
This institute will examine the refugee movements and refugee camps of mainland Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar/Burma) in the wake of violent Cold War politics and into the twenty-first century. Our investigation will consider the significance of refugee camps across a spectrum of meaning, from transnational politics to personal identity and from immigration policy to cultural production. And as we grapple with the histories, narratives, politics, and theories of refugee camps and refugeeism, we will devise and design purposeful pedagogical applications that engage students in the relevant issues that support our curricular goals. Furthermore, we will be attentive to local refugee communities and students with refugee legacies in the intellectual and pedagogical work of the institute. We will approach our course materials as epistemological lenses that refract, reflect, distort, and magnify the refugee camp and refugee experiences they represent. These materials will engage several disciplines (film and literary studies, history, and political science) through various media (film, essay, visual art, literature, hypertext). Thus this institute hopes to attract a broad, interdisciplinary cohort of teachers.

Quantitative Reasoning: Best Methods and Ideas for Curriculum Reform

April 3 - April 4, 2009

Keynote Speaker: Claudia Neuhauser, Nathan Grawe and Anneke Metz
Quantitative reasoning (QR) skills are those that use data in decision making. Quantitative reasoning contributes conspicuously to hypothesis testing in STEM areas as a method of active learning about the scientific process. More broadly, QR is a critical part of what one should expect of an informed citizenry. Witness the use of statistics in the recent election cycle, and exaggerated claims in advertisements for various products and services. The ability to evaluate quantitative information is on par with effective communication skills in preparing students for success in life after college. This workshop's purpose is to introduce QR and facilitate interdisciplinary and interinstitutional discussions and actions on QR throughout the curriculum.

Our failure to fully engage our publics with the kinds of learning best suited to our current needs persists even as the creative energies, widespread innovations, and intentional efforts of campuses across the nation are signaling resurgence in the vitality and relevance of liberal education.
Are we ready to exercise the leadership higher education and American society needs? Are our students ready to learn? How can we boost their readiness? Is society ready to make difficult choices about educational priorities? Are our institutions ready to face the societal and economic changes at hand?
Are we ready to fulfill America’s promise—or not?

Most in academia agree that assessment should happen, but the debate is about how it should be done. Many also agree that accountability should exist, but accountable to whom? This workshop presents a framework that covers the assessment cycle, a culture of evidence, assessment practices, why we must act, and lastly addresses the question: “Is Assessment Working?”

CULTURE MATTERS: Designing Learning Environments to Foster Cultural Awareness and Intercultural Competence"
View detailsEvent
Location: Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, Bloomington, Minnesota
November 21 - November 22, 2008
Keynote Speaker: Carlos Cortés
The effects of culture are everywhere in higher education, providing abundant opportunities as well as challenges for strengthening college teaching and learning. They range from the implications of serving an increasingly diverse student population or integrating global learning into the curriculum to the ways each institution and discipline transmits its particular perspectives, values, and practices to new generations. The goal of this conference is to explore the premise that culture, in all of its manifestations, is emerging as a fundamental influence on teaching and learning in the 21st century. Not only must today's faculty, staff, and students be culturally aware and interculturally competent to be successful, but efforts to strengthen college teaching and learning can be helped or hindered according to whether cultural differences are taken into account. The learning-centered institution is one where reflection on diverse perspectives is embedded in its work—one where culture matters.

Presenter/Facilitator: Associate Professor Paul Carney and Dr. Frankie Condon
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Etienne Wenger
This conference will gather education professionals from both the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the national community to discuss how collaborative communities have helped and can continue to help students' and teachers' growth in classrooms. The topic is meant to involve education professionals (particuarily relevant but not exclusive to those whose field is education) as students themselves or as educators.
Because all teachers do best when they communitcate with each other, education professionals will be presenting and discussing how classrooms can be more collaborative in nature, including reaching outside of themselves and into the sphere of the community at large. It is an opportunity to meet with educators who are in the process of research projects and publications. Participants who present will be eligible to publish their work in an online education journal edited by Dr. Winston Gittens at SMSU. Graduate students, secondary teachers and college professors across the nation are invited to participate as presenters. In addition, three keynote speakers will present.

Network for Academic Renewal Conference
Diversity, Learning, and Inclusive Excellence: Accelerating and Assessing Progress will highlight curricular, co-curricular, and institutional models that enable higher education leaders to develop, implement, assess, and continually learn from the experience of fostering diverse learning environments—environments in which all students develop, in increasingly sophisticated ways, critical knowledge, skills, and capacities for work and citizenship.
The conference aims to help campuses take diversity efforts to the next level of comprehensive, coordinated action, where educational benefits for all students and for the institution more broadly, can be demonstrated in meaningful ways. Campus leaders have too frequently marked progress by a proliferation of projects that lack connection to one another, to larger institutional goals, or to other campus activities. In this new conceptualization, progress is marked by a move from isolated programs and course offerings to a network of policies and actions, including policies and actions around assessment.

These challenges and opportunities are the focus of The Collaboration's winter 2008 conference.
