Learning Objects
Reusable Course Materials
Learning objects are defined as small, independent chunks of knowledge or interactions stored in a database, which can be presented as units of instruction or information. They are typically self-contained, interactive, and reusable. Another definition includes "any digital resource that can be reused to support learning."
Learning objects include everything from syllabi, interactive projects, flash diagrams to audio and/or video presentations and can be utilized in on-ground via a computer lab or through an access link in your online course.
MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Online Teaching)
MERLOT is a great place to begin your search for reusable course materials. This free resource is specifically designed for and by faculty and students in higher education. Access links to materials that can be used in online courses are provided as well as assignments and assessments. Annotations from peer reviews will help you determine how useful each offering might be in your courses. New in MERLOT are its Discipline and Special Interest Communities.
The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System is a MERLOT System Partner.
There are many "vaults" of learning objects called learning object repositories. These repositiories are sponsored by academic institutions, have been created by members of faculties from around the world and are often free. You can also share your own creations. Use the CTL search engine to find those found in our database. Type in "repositories."
