Spring 2006 Workshop Outcomes
Women’s Studies
April 2006
The Center for Teaching and Learning’s first Discipline Workshop for the field of Women’s Studies took place April 6-7, 2006. Over 62 participants registered for the workshop; and there was good representation from both the 2-year colleges and the 4-year state universities, plus attendees from the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas.
The keynote address "The State of Women's Studies in MnSCU and Beyond" was presented by Judith Roy, Century College, and President of National Women's Studies Association. Concurrent sessions were presented offering a good variety of topics. The sessions included (A) Focus on Students: Identities and Communities, (B) Pedagogy and Practicalities: How to Get the Job Done, (C) The Academic Scene for Women's Studies in MnSCU, and (D) Intersection: Theory and Activism Across Disciplines. Session presenters were:
- Century College: Kris Peleg and Brian Lewis
- Metropolitan State University: Mary Kirk and Julie A. Wilbert
- Minneapolis Community and Technical College: Carol Hogard, Mary Pruitt, and Kate Lynn Hibbard
- Minnesota State University, Mankato: Cathryn Bailey, Maria Bevacqua, Susan Freeman, Jocelyn Fenton Stitt, and Cheryl Radeloff
- Minnesota State University, Moorhead: Laurie Blunsom, Michelle Malott, Annette Morrow, and Anita Bender
- Normandale Community College: Janet Michele Red Feather
- Rochester Community College: Pam Whitfield
- St. Cloud State University: Margaret Villanueva, Beth Berila, Phyllis Greenberg, and Kyoko Kishimoto
- University of St. Thomas: Laurie Anderson Sathe
Overall, faculty leaders felt the workshop was successful and strongly recommended that the workshop be an annual event. They also recommended that a Women’s Studies listserv be created. Leaders felt it was especially important to have more interaction between the 2-year and 4-year institutions in order to bring about greater cohesion in the women’s studies field throughout the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system.
