Selecting a Campus Leader
While the CTL Steering Committee respects the diversity of campus-based faculty development efforts (involving teams rather than one leader, for instance), all campuses should attempt to follow the following guidelines:
- The CTL Campus leader should be the institution's designated faculty development director or coordinator, if such a position exists. If this is not possible, the CTL Campus Leader is expected to work with the institution's chief academic officer and faculty governance to define campus priorities.
- CTL Campus Leaders should be identified by faculty in a process that encourages diversity in appointments and rotation of appointments over time
- The process for identifying CTL Campus Leaders needs to be publicly communicated on campus.
- CTL Campus Leaders should serve for defined renewable terms.
- The campus community(including faculty and administrators) should have recourse if the CTL Campus Leader is not performing at a minimal level.
The CTL Campus Leader Brochure has additional information that will be helpful in selecting a campus leader.
Role of the CAO in Selection
The Center for Teaching and Learning works with campus chief academic officers, or CAOs, to ensure that the CTL Campus Leader position serves the institution's needs. The designated CTL Campus leader should be a faculty member who can support faculty development activities on campus and represent the campus in statewide meetings. By October 1st of each academic year, campus CAOs must submit a "CTL Campus Leader Designation" form designating the name of the CTL Campus Leader for the upcoming academic year.
The "CTL Campus Leader Designation" form asks the CAO to identify:
- The working relationship between the CTL Campus Leader and other campus faculty development leaders (e.g. the director of a campus teaching center)
- The process by which a CTL Campus Leader is selected.
- The process by which a CTL Campus Leader is evaluated.
CTL encourages CAOs to use supplemental funds to provide reassignment and other resources for CTL Campus Leaders. If other such resources are made available, please inform CTL.
Leader Responsibilities
- Although local roles and responsibilities of CTL campus leaders may vary, the responsibilities common to all CTL campus leaders are these:
- Provide support and feedback to faculty who are involved in undertaking teaching/learning innovations
- Organize and facilitate campus CTL meetings and activities
- Invite faculty to campus CTL meetings, system or regional workshops and conferences
- Provide assistance to the MnSCU CTL staff to assist in statewide planning and program delivery
- Assist the MnSCU CTL staff in identifying information that can be published in campus bulletins, CTL publications, and Web sites
- Collaborate with other leaders (CAOs, administrators, faculty representatives) to meet the teaching needs of the faculty at MnSCU institutions
- Attend CTL Campus Leadership workshops
- Coordinate and disseminate information for MnSCU CTL activities in timely manner
- Manage the campus CTL budget
- Submit a year-end campus activities and budget report
